while fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains repeat
the sounding joy.
---Isaac Watts, 1719
How very interesting that this beloved carol emphasizes
nature’s share in the joy surrounding Christ’s birth! Perhaps the message of
joy and hope for the world is just too big to entrust entirely to angels, or to
shepherds. The wonders of nature cannot help but bear witness with us to a
liberating love big enough to encompass every part of our world. In a world
where the Savior reigns, all of us --- rocks, floods, plains, plainsdwellers --- are freed from the curse that binds us to
smallness and failure. The echoes of God’s love “re-sound”…and
nothing will ever sound the same.
Joy to the world…the whole wide world!
